Weekly Wrap – Week 22

Serenity, a return to School and the doldrums headlined the final match day of the year.

The D Grade begun their match against Brahma Lodge with only one sub and as Danzo put some unwanted kilometres into the Mercedes returning home to collect his forgotten boots. On his return he found that OISC had started slowly conceding three goals in the opening half hour putting them on the ropes. They were able to get one back with Leachy sending Will Ventura through with a nice first time ball over the top and a cool finish. Shortly after OISC were right back in the match, making the most of a mistimed clearance by the keeper which bounced off Will Ventura through to Iordy who shrugged off a defender and slotted it past the keeper. The second half started evenly but a defensive error clearing the ball landed it with the Brahma striker who converted, to seal the points for Brahma 4-2.

The C Grade under the guidance of stand-in coach Ron looked to back-up their victory against Sturt Marion earlier in the year. The opening stages of the match however were dominated by Sturt whose early howler missing a clear open net set the tone for the rest of the match. Making them pay for their miss a Davide Cavuoto run down the left side and attempt on goal got the ball out to Greg Buch at the top of the box who proved he too can turn back the clock rocketing it into the back of the net. Coming out of half time, OISC continued to look dangerous, Nick Tsekenis thanks to a new haircut in particular was causing the Sturt defence trouble. A Johnno long throw into the box and resulting own goal extended the advantage before a Joel Ortner cross allowed AK to tap in OISC’s third sealing a 3-0 victory.

The B Grade’s day couldn’t have started any worse conceding a penalty in the opening 30 seconds. They did however receive a reprieve when the spot kick was sent wide. Like the C Grade this was the sum total of Sturt’s scoring opportunities as OISC made them pay with a Gianfranco free popped over the wall to John Smith coming perilously close before Johnny found himself on the end of a Phil through ball to open the scoring. In the second half OISC stepped up a gear, Anthony Verlato disrupting a Sturt attacking move and sending the ball out to Dos to carry the ball down the wing and cross into Tom Surman who finished to extend the lead to two. From here OISC relentlessly peppered the goal with a Raf shot saved, the deflection coming out to Adam Sorgini who put in the third. The undoubted highlight of the day came from Tom Surman who took a bouncing ball and cannoned it into the opposite side top corner before Sorge’s second sealed a comprehensive 5-0 drubbing.

The A Grade yet again let the opposition make an easy start to the match, conceding within the opening 3 minutes. OISC did level up again mid-way through the half with a Carbs free from a Sturt handball finding its way to Gary Dal Broi to score. This swing the momentum back to OISC as the lead should have been taken approaching half time had a Chris Gauro shot from a Carbs throw in not hit the post and bounced clear. OISC continued to dominate in the early stages after the break a shot hitting the underside of the crossbar and somehow staying out. Like has happened so many times this year after a moment like this the opposing side takes the ball down the other end and scores immediately. This was the beginning of the end for the boys as Sturt put another one in before the final whistle to take the match 3-1.
