Cup Round, winter sunshine and records headlined a weekend where only the A Grade were in action
The A Grade granted 2016 debuts to Adrian Stenta and Steven Anfiteatro against Sunday Div 1 side Tea Tree Gully City. OISC started in a positive fashion creating several early chances and were rewarded when a lovely cross from Sholto Broderick beat the defence and fell invitingly for Mike Manou to slam home the opener. Nick Barbieri soon made it 2-0 after a left foot finish into the bottom right hand corner following a great through ball. Gully’s young side began to get some possession as the half progressed but were not able to create any serious scoring chances. Playing on the counter OISC was able to regularly open up the Gully defensive line peppering the goal with shots; Barbs having one cleared off the line following a header. Captain Gary Dal Broi made it 3-0 putting in a header off a Manou long throw. OISC continued to build attacking pressure; Barbs putting in his second to extend the advantage to four which was quickly extended to five with a spectacular volley from outside the box from Julian Titaro finding its way into the back of the net. As half time approached Mike got his brace after some fantastic pressing in the final third forced the under siege Gully defence into a mistake. The second half did not live up to the same excitement as the first, OISC continued to control the bulk of the possession creating a number of chances but were unlucky not to increase their lead further. In the end the damage done in the first half was more than enough as OISC took a 6-0 victory and passage to the Quarter Final as only one of three Saturday sides remaining in the Challenge Cup (along with Adel Uni and BOSA) while also becoming the first Saturday Div 2A team to reach the Quarter Final stage since the Bill Cagialis coached OISC A Grade in 2010.
Next week big clashes await with the A/B/C Grades heading west to chase important points against Titans while the D and E Grades head north to take on a pack of Northern Wolves. The Lady Wolves again have no match as they move into the second week of their season break.
