Weekly Wrap – Cup Round 3 & WCL Round 11

Cup Round, Extra Time and Captain’s Goals headlined a successful week for the two teams in action.

The B Grade took on Adelaide Uni in the third round of the reserve cup and immediately took the advantage with Phillip Dichiera maintaining his recent quota of a goal a game giving OISC the early lead. Maintaining most of the early attacking the Uni keeper was put under pressure. Not long after OISC was awarded a penalty and keeper Emerson Ciccarello like a gazelle sprinted the length of the pitch to take the kick (yes, you read that correctly). The resulting conversion saw a 2-0 lead open up. Following this the B’s settled into a bit of a rhythm of maintaining possession, going forward. Uni after some time were able to break this rhythm scoring twice in quick succession taking advantage of the speed of some of their players to bring the game back to 2-2. Most of the second half the game was evenly poised with both sides having opportunities to take the lead but the game was destined to go into extra time. OISC attacked early trying to regain the lead, soon they were rewarded with a strike from 30 yards from Captain Daniel Rossi putting OISC back in front. His celebration of signalling to coach D’Onofrio that he immediately wanted to be subbed proving to be as memorable as the goal. In the end it was the difference with the game finishing with a 3-2 win to OISC, progressing them through to the Cup Quarter Finals.

On Sunday the OISC Women took on Adelaide Uni Grey and immediately took advantage scoring in the opening minutes. OISC maintained possession and peppered the Uni goal with shots. The heavy conditions made the going difficult with the ball sitting up in the mud. Uni had limited chances to push into their attacking half with the defensive line pushing the ball back out again quickly. At half time OISC held a dominating 5-0 lead. The second half continued where the first left off with OISC dominating possession and continuing to take shots from all corners of their attacking half. With a comfortable lead and 20 to play, coach Rossi put into action “Operation get Lucia a goal” moving her from the central defence to the striker role, a number of missed chances made it look like it wasn’t going to be until a perfect cross into the box saw the Captain put it in the back of the net giving her her first goal and capping off a dominating 10-0 win and extending their winning streak. The other goals were spread between Alysia Panagakos (4) and Leah Contos (2). Sarah Tronnolone also scored her fourth hat-trick of the season; regular readers of the Cynical Hack will know that the odds of this happening were $2.10 on Danzo’s Sports Betting so see if you can get a payout from Danzo!!!

Next week the men’s teams return to the league with A/B/C Grades taking on St Peters and the D/E Grades testing their fitness on the wide expanses of the Strathablyn Recreation Reserve. The OISC Women meanwhile face Adelaide Uni Black at Glenunga on Sunday.
