Football is back with the OISC Captain’s Armband at The Maylands Hotel last night, launching Season 2014. This is where captains are named and the hopes and aspirations for the upcoming season are set out.
The night opened with a welcome from the new OISC President, Nicholas Tallarida, who looked toward building on the good foundation that was set last year and thanked the coaches and committee for their hard work to get Season 2014 off to a good start.
The women’s team looked to build a strong leadership group with coach Daniel Rossi naming 2013 Best and Fairest Sarah Tronnolone as captain. Lucia Caretti and Alysia Panagakos both previous captains of the side named as Vice Captains showing the strong leadership that they hope will take them to the next level this year
Excited to be returning to a public speaking role post presidency, E Grade Coach Daniel ‘Danzo’ Hurt threw away 21st century ideals to go back to an old school plan of one captain, one leader, again naming David Leach captain of a side which will be highly experienced and hoping to deliver success.
The D Grade continues to be a work in progress with the captain yet to be named as the Div 4A squad continues to develop.
The C Grade elected to keep things the same, like the E Grade, naming the same captain as last year with Frank Maio again receiving the armband. Coach Greg Buch going for an old head to lead the side both as a mentor and also to “keep him company.”
The new Division 1 coaches Peter Buckley and a very softly spoken David Baker set out their plans for the senior sides with Peter saying “we came here with experience and we will give everything to this club to succeed, we can see it here.” There is hope that the pre-season can build into a successful year and that players who have shown promise and continue to develop and make important contributions to the club in 2014.
Paul Barolo was named B Grade captain and he hoped to use his experience to both lead the B Grade to success and also to help the young players in the side develop and push for selection in the A Grade. The A Grade looked to build leadership throughout the team with all players encouraged to stand up and make a contribution. Adrian Stenta was again named A Grade Captain for his outstanding leadership with Peter Barone as his Vice Captain.
Apart from the formalities the night is one where the club comes together as one to launch into a new season, special guest appearances are made such as the messiah Adam Carbone, friendships re-kindled over a drink or two (Carbs and Rocco) and old friends and coaches welcomed back into the fold.
Thanks to those who attended with a great turnout coming to see the season get off to a good start and with Round 1 kicking off next week on Saturday with the As, Bs and Cs taking on Modbury Jets, the Ds and Es playing Northern Pitbulls and on Sunday the OISC Women taking on Westminster.
